When sports athletes are recognized at having a unique natural ability or skill set, they may find themselves being branded as super human, or at some times perfect. What this does is it creates an identity of perfection and they may even find themselves living that identity.

Now this can be seen as them playing well, with an image of confidence that no one else can match, but what tends to happen is when these same players are playing in a bigger stage such as the world cup, they just don’t seem to perform as well as they were and are a shadow of what there potential can do. The great goals and performance that was seen throughout a season from the same player is not evident at these tournaments.

The players can begin to feel immense pressure on themselves to not only continue to perform at that high level but to excel and exceed that level of performance and perfection as they enter a tournament such as the world cup. What you will find is the players who stand out at such tournaments are not necessarily the key players you notice in club teams, so why is that?

With world class players wanting to perform and showcase their talents on the big stage, they each set the bar at a very high level of success and performance, and want to play at that peak level and want to be perfect.
They each realize their competition will be bringing their best teams and the tournaments best players will be completely ready for battle. The tournaments always have a long history, and we all know which teams are expected to shine and which teams are under performers. What this can do is build up the tournament to a great level of expectation in the athletes mind to the point where they see themselves as a key component in their teams progression and winning mentality. This pressure to perform will see world class players under performing and leaving the gateway for players without the spot light shining on them being able to showcase themselves as a figure in the sports world.

What separates the greats and the champions from the average teams is that the champions even when they are not playing at their maxim still find a way to win games. Players need not to have such immense pressure on themselves to be perfect in everything they do but need to be perfect in doing the basics and everything else will flow, with the basics being simple quick passing, and shooting on goal. The simple things are a lot easier to master and perfect than something that only few talented athletes at few occasions can do perfect each and every time. This simple method can powerfully guarantee your confidence escalating to the point where you don’t feel the gripping amount of pressure that only ever serves to diminish your performance and game.

Seeking perfection puts an immense amount of pressure on yourself as a player and you notice this after games during media conferences with players saying the same things “ We weren’t good enough” they constantly are beating themselves up by re-affirming these negative attitudes and statements of self doubt. Does this build self confidence? Of course not! So wouldn’t perfecting the basics and not having pressure to do amazing things be more beneficial in the long run? This would clearly see players developing their confidence naturally through time.

Sports NLP can show you how you can perform just like the champions and how you can win even when you’re not at your best. The teams that move on and win tournaments at the world cup are the teams that are not playing their best in the first few rounds yet keep managing to win. This builds confidence to the point where they look so confident and un-beatable in games and peak at the right time in tournaments.
